My students need 130 copies of the compelling novel "Tears of a Tiger", by Sharon Draper.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Stork's classroom raised $1,168
This project is fully funded
While I am extremely grateful that my school has a copy room I can use to make chapter packets of novels for my students, I am frustrated that my Saturdays are spent copying page after page of literature due to a lack of funds for books.
"Tears of a Tiger" is part of Sharon Draper's Hazelwood High Trilogy- a spellbinding saga of friends who experience a tragic drunk driving accident, difficult childhoods, and the death of a friend. Draper, a former teacher, incorporates poetry, diary entries, and even notes between characters to tell this tragic tale.
"Tears of a Tiger" is a story that high schoolers readily connect with and is easily taught to Arkansas State Standards. With the purchase of 130 books, I would no longer need to use the school's copying resources to teach a novel the students love.
While our school is consistently listed as in "academic distress" and is considered poverty-stricken, we are working steadily to improve our state test scores and the learning experiences of all our students. We are located in the Arkansas Delta, one of the most diverse - yet mostly segregated- portions of the state. That is not to say that the high school in which I teach is solely for African-American students, but many of the wealthier families in the area send their children to private academies in nearby towns. 100% of our school receives free lunch and my students often are forced to attend classes without supplies.
My students deserve to love literature, just as any other student does. We need 130 copies of The Tears of a Tiger. With this novel I would be able to send the books home with students, allowing them to experience the novel in a personal way in their own space. Personal copies of the literature also allow students to show the novel to others, thus spreading a love of books and increasing my students' analytical abilities when others ask them questions.
Please help my students to develop an interest in reading this year. Your generosity will help empower these students to identify with literature and will help hook them into becoming life-long readers who are better prepared to enter college and become productive citizens.
