Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!

Help me give my students things like a scooter, helmets, and paint sets for team building resources and activities for our choir retreats.

My Students

I have the pleasure of teaching at one of the largest, and diverse high schools in Mississippi. We are located in the upper north part of Mississippi, minutes away from Memphis, TN. My students range from grades 9-12 and more than half of them are from low-income households.

My choirs have a large spectrum of personalities, backgrounds, and come from many different walks of life.

My students aren't afraid to be themselves, something I admire them for. They are intelligent, talented, courageous, young people that are going to change the world. Music is what brings us together. I am happy that my classroom is where young people can put their differences aside and come together for a common goal, which is to make beautiful music.

My Project

Social and emotional learning is the set of skills, knowledge, and behaviors involved in understanding and managing emotions, setting positive goals, feeling empathy for others, engaging in positive relationships, and solving problems effectively.

I strive each and every day to create a classroom environment that is conducive to social and emotional learning.

I do this by holding choir retreats twice a year, once in the Fall and once in the Spring. At the choir retreats, the students are broken up into teams so that they can meet and socialize with other members of the choir. While in these teams, students work together to solve problems and to reach a common goal. This project consists of scooter boards, helmets, tarps and paint. All of these materials will allow us to continue to build positive relationships, set goals, problem-solve and take our team building and choir retreats to the next level.
