I teach Physical Education at an elementary school located in North Miami. My students now have recess in addition to PE, which means that the demand for physical education supplies has almost doubled in order to accommodate all students.
My school has a high number of students who were affected after Hurricane Irma devastated our community and now we are welcoming students from Puerto Rico who were displaced by Hurricane Maria.
My school also has a high number of students who are high poverty, ESOL, and ELL, and there are a few who are Special Education and gifted.
Our students love to exercise, but due to the devastation of the hurricanes, the parks, and surrounding grounds are still not safe for them to play in.
My Project
Our school's music department just recently started a percussion program. Out of that, emerged our marching band program for sports day and home games. There are only four sets of drums, which have to be shared among twenty-six talented drummers.
The drums our school had before are missing screws, need new skins and are dented.
The P.E. department is trying to get our own drums so that there would be at least enough for half of the students in the band. We need at last seven more drums but we will try to attain them one at a time until we have enough for our new marching band. Your donation would help to take one step at a time in building or teams' marching band.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
