My 110 students rotate to my Science and Social Studies class from five different homeroom classes throughout each day. They are bright and eager to learn about the world around them.
My fifth graders are a diverse and energetic group of 10 and 11 year olds.
As a grade level center, every 4th, 5th, and 6th grader in town comes to our school. That means that they come from every socioeconomic group, from the wealthiest family in town to the poorest. They come to school with a wide array of experiences in life and school. It is my job to present them with as even a playing field as I possibly can. Enriching my classroom is one way I try to do this.
My Project
My request is for a standing desk for two. This will allow my students to work as a team while also allowing them to get out of their seats and onto their feet.
Standing at a desks has been shown to promote physical fitness by burning more calories than sitting all day.
This can be important during COVID because obesity has been shown to be a risk factor. In addition, fifth graders have so much energy that some of them struggle with sitting in a desk all day.
Fifth grade is also an age where social skills are developing. Having a desk for two will help them learn to work together and collaborate on projects.
