This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that services students from TK to 5th grade. We are located in the middle of a big, urban community which has limited parks and public spaces for students to lead continuous active and healthy lives.

Our school is located in the heart of Los Angeles a few miles form downtown LA where sports are a major part of our city.

We are a Title One school that serves low income families from different cultural backgrounds. Running and soccer are two sports that all of our students can participate in.

My Project

Last school year, we started a running club at our school lead by a few teachers and I after school. This year, we will continue with our running club and include a soccer club.

The running/soccer club's goal is to promote the importance of health and exercise in our daily lives.

This after school program will be open to all our TK-5th grade students, parents and our staff. Students, parents and staff will be tracking every mile they complete during running club. We'd like for all participants to track their progress and every full marathon completed. Participation in running club will motivate a more healthy life style, increase motivation, support classroom learning and improve self esteem.

During our running club, we always identify elite runners and provide them with extra training. Our goal, this year, is to enroll those potential elite runners into area marathons and races. The batons will help prep these elite runners on proper rally hand offs, proper pace and staying in the correct lane. The megaphones will help the club leaders gather all students, lead warm ups, and direct different activities.

Soccer is a beloved sport at our school and community. Many of our students don't have the opportunity to participate in an organized league. This year, we will focus on teaching basic soccer skills that many of our students haven't been exposed to. We will focus on safety, learning the proper rules of the game and the importance of sportsmanship. The balls and cones will help teach the basic skills such as dribbling and ball handling. The pinnies and goals will allow us to scrimmage and learn the rules of the game. This will lead our students to learn tolerance, patience, and team work. Sports matter and we want our students to know why!
