Team Sports - Helping to Eliminate Bullying in Schools

My students need the book Bullying in Schools, Bully Free Zone in a Jar, and softball equipment such as a foam bat and ball combo, wiffle bat, softball bat and tee.

My Students

Sports are an awesome outlet for kids and teach them discipline, character building skills and the meaning of teamwork. Kids need to see and be taught that our attitude, win or lose, is a reflection of our inner strength and character. Lessons learned on a sports team will last a lifetime.

I teach at a small, rural Title I, K-8 school.

My students range in age from nine to fourteen. I teach math to six classes of awesome fifth and sixth graders. The students enjoy our interactive learning environment and enjoy the experience of school. The average per capita income for my county is $17,225. The poverty rate in my county in 2008 was 21.5%. The official U.S. poverty rate in 2008 was 13.2% (U.S. Census Bureau). With today's economy I am sure that the statistics are even more daunting. Approximately eighty percent of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. Some of the students are reluctant to participate in extra-curricular activities due to the lack of funds for necessary materials. Having equipment that all students may use puts everyone on an even playing field.

My Project

My students need resources such as the book, "Bullying in Schools" and Bully Free Zone in a Jar. They also need sports equipment such as softball bats and balls to use as they participate in sporting team events. The students learn, through discussions and playing sports, the importance of respecting and appreciating the differences in each other. They learn how detrimental it is to tear others down with words or gestures and the lasting effects and value of building others up. They learn that everyone is an integral piece of the whole, and that it takes the whole to be successful, win or lose. They learn that winning and losing both provide opportunities to grow character and promote sportsmanship. They learn the true meaning of friendship and dedication.

This project is important to me because I want to provide as many opportunities as possible for the students.

Living in a small rural area, it is especially important to present the students with many diverse opportunities that will help them to build character, strength, integrity and lasting relationships.
