This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my school are middle school students in 6th-8th grade, and all 300 are in my physical education classes. 100% are on free & reduced lunch and live in the most economically challenged area in the county. Most students come from single parent homes with little to no support on their educational goals, homework, or meeting any needs above the most basic.
Despite the unbelievable daily hardships and adversity these students face, they come to class ready to give it their all!
Most start out with little confidence, but as soon as the smallest increment of positive reinforcement or success is experienced, they feel so proud and work even harder to reach their individual goals. It is incredibly rewarding to be a part of the growth and success of this group of young people.
My Project
Most of my 300 students have never played on a team or in any kind of competitive sports. I want to provide this opportunity for all students and am starting with a boys and a girls soccer team to play soccer against nearby schools' teams. Our school does not have a playground or grass, so I have organized soccer practices on Saturday mornings at a nearby park.
We need basic equipment to start this soccer team.
I bought the first set of jerseys, but there are not enough for everyone that wants to participate. We also need other soccer equipment such as goalie gloves and jerseys, soccer socks, and of course, soccer balls.
