Teaching Writing with Picture Books

My class needs these children's literature books so I can have effective writing lessons.

I teach in a rural elementary school. There are approximately 350 students in our K-4 school.

I took a writing class last summer that used children's picture books to teach writing skills to elementary school-aged children. I got so excited, because I had finally found a great way for my students to grasp the writing process. Unfortunately, none of the books listed are in our library.

I will use the various children's books listed to effectively teach a writing workshop to my children. This will greatly benefit my teaching of various mini lessons, such as: using illustrations to convey information, describing the setting, how to pace a story, and using your voice when you write. There are many writing lessons that I learned from that summer course. I simply need the books in order to teach these mini lessons.

Why is it that so often teachers take a professional class and then do nothing with the knowledge that was gained from that class? I believe it because the resources needed for implementation are not available. By having these children's books I will be able to effectively teach many writing skills.
