My Students

Currently, I have one iPad in my classroom and it is the most sought-after item in my classroom. While I have three desktop computers, kids would rather gather around the iPad and share. They love their touch screens!

I have 17 eager kindergarten students.

They are ready to learn all about their letters and numbers and begin to read, write, add and subtract. A set of tablets will help with all of that! Tablets make learning fun -- sometimes so much so, the students forget how much they're learning. While roughly 85 percent of students at my school qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, our school offers every student breakfast and lunch for free. We are a diverse classroom in many ways. We represent several ethnicities and cultures. Some students attended preschool; for some this is their first foray into school. Some have other languages spoken in the home; some have only English. Several have parents in the Army.

My Project

With four tablets, students can each have one during literacy and math station time. Currently, I only have one tablet and several students crowd around. They need to be practicing skills on their own as much as possible. Students need time! There are a number of great apps students can use to increase their learning of numbers, letters, reading and math. As their reading skills grow, we can download books to read. Most of these things can also be downloaded on tablets at home or parents phones to keep the learning going at home. It's a great way to increase dialogue -- and practice time -- between home and school.

These students have grown up on technology.

While I certainly believe they must also be ready to use their pencils, paper, scissors and glue, they love tablets. I want to use that love of technology and show them how they can use that to learn.
