This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine uprooting your entire life and being transplanted to a completely foreign country. You walk into a classroom, you may not have ever had any formal education before, and you see an unknown alphabet strewn across hard walls that are trying their best to appear as inviting as possible despite the peeling paint. You have never written or read and you have a smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach every day.
I work in a large school, in an even larger school district, with a very high immigrant population in South Central, L.A.
Many of my students have limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting in a brand new and intimidating country. We move from learning letters to reading very quickly. I help students learn English while teaching them the 3rd grade curriculum they desperately need to become successful and move forward in their educational careers. My students have come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream, but with extremely limited resources, they need the tools to achieve it.
My Project
My third grade class needs 3 Amazon Fire tablets (and cases just in case!) to accompany the three I have already personally purchased; having 6 tablets in total will allow my students to use educational applications such as Starfall and Reading A-Z to build their literacy and advance their English Language Development.
Tablets are an easy and engaging way to incorporate literacy and language development into guided reading groups.
My students are all considered emerging English Language Learners and struggle greatly with reading and writing; these tablets will allow me to individualize my instruction to target each student's specific language needs. Having these tablets permanently located in our classroom also allows for additional literacy (and even math) practice for early finishers! These tablets will be well used and well loved by my students for many years to come!
