Teaching Tolerance Through Gamification - Break Out Boxes! Part Two
My students need utility boxes, locks and other materials so that I can create Breakout Boxes for them to experience games that require critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication as they solve challenging puzzles.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Sullins's classroom raised $433
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students, in grades nine through twelve, walk into our classroom everyday full of life, ready to learn and excited for what is in store for them that day. Our site enrolls approximately eighteen hundred, amazing students, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced price lunch.
They love to take Family and Consumer Sciences courses because students make connections between abstract concepts with real-world applications and recognize the value of academic preparation for solving problems, communicating with others and obtaining work-related skills.
In the Family and Consumer Science classrooms at my high school, students learn how to make informed decisions about their well-being, relationships and resources for a better quality of life today and tomorrow!
My Project
"Breakout box" is a learning game platform which allows students to use teamwork and critical thinking to solve a series of challenging puzzles in order to open a locked box. This activity will focus on the fundamental knowledge and skills that students need to prepare for transition to post-secondary education, career training or the workforce. In CTE classes, students learn critical thinking, problem solving and team building. I look forward to using the breakout box activities in lessons to help students gain career ready skills. Career-ready individuals understand the obligations and responsibilities of being a member of a community and demonstrate this understanding everyday through their interactions with others.
Breakout boxes activities will enable students to use critical thinking skills that will have them solving problems in new and different ways, using physical, social and tactile methods to solve problems.
There can be up to forty students in each of my classes, so in order to keep groups of a manageable size, we will eventually need ten sets of this equipment. I'm excited about the opportunity to get students moving, thinking critically and collaborating with each other to solve problems.
More than half of students from low‑income households
