My Students

Our elementary school has a high poverty status and is home to over 400 students. Twenty-five of these students are in my kindergarten classroom. Regardless of our socioeconomic status, these students are young, ambitious, and excited to learn. Kindergarten students are overjoyed with new experiences and enjoy new classroom tools. I want to provide my students with the educational experience that they deserve. When I give them 100%, they always give 110%! It is an honor to lead them and to learn alongside them.

My Project

Tolerance is having an interest and acceptance of other's ideas and beliefs that differs from their own. It is a life skill that even kindergarten students need. Tolerance provides a culture where our differences are not only embraced but celebrated. As I look around my classroom, I recognize that every child is different and unique. Each child looks different, talks differently, expressed themselves differently. I want their uniqueness to be celebrated. More importantly, I want every other child in our room to recognize those differences and truly embrace them.

So why do we need these requested painting supplies to teach tolerance?

First, students will be given a blank canvas. They will be asked to paint a picture of their families. Part of the process is thinking about what makes your family unique. What is your ethnicity? How many people are in your family? Is there a special holiday or tradition you want included in your picture. Students will pump acrylic paint onto their individual paint trays and begin their artwork. Not all families are the same, but we can teach students to respect others and see that different does not warrant a negative reaction. Different is beautiful. Second, students will present their paintings to classmates. We can create an environment that encourages us to listen to others and learn from their experiences. We will encourage differences in our paintings and celebrate the differences.
