The diverse backgrounds of my students make teaching one curriculum difficult. My students need differentiated instruction to provide meaningful and purposeful language and literacy activities to support their speaking, reading, and writing development.
Even though we are a Title I school and my students enter kindergarten with many disadvantages, they are eager to learn.
By having my students work in small groups, I can provide the individualization they need to be successful and ready to move on to first grade.
My Project
A teaching table will give my students the ability to collaborate with their peers. I've tried to use my existing furniture which meant putting odd shaped tables together. I have used two trapezoid tables in the shape of an "L". I've used a long rectangular table. There are always students who are out of my view and they tend to sit on the sidelines and become observers rather than active participants.
A teaching table will provide opportunities for students to sit side by side and always have face to face access with the teacher.
They will be able to have conversations and interactions with both the teacher and other students which will make learning more meaningful and purposeful. For my students, speaking and asking questions of their peers helps to support language development and provide background knowledge of topics that some students are not familiar with. Collaborative conversations are important for my students to build their critical thinking skills and to share experiences with each other.
