This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our middle school is a Title I school with over 80% of its students having free or reduced-price lunch. I am the AVID elective teacher at NMS. AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID students tend to be from socioeconomically disadvantaged families and will be the first in their families to attend college.
AVID aims at bringing the student who is in the academic middle, placing them in rigorous, college-preparatory classes, and teaching them the skills they will need to be successful in college and in their future careers.
AVID is also a school-wide program. We infuse AVID methodologies throughout all classrooms on campus.
My Project
AVID is a school-wide program where we utilize a curriculum based on a acronym called "WICOR". WICOR stand for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. Organization is a part of WICOR that we really try to incorporate at a school-wide level. Organization is a soft skill that is very important to learn for students.
Organization is often not directly taught in schools because academic classes are often tirelessly trying to fit in all of their core curriculum during the school day.
As a school, there are several components of organization that we do school-wide. Every student uses a 3 inch binder for all of their core classes, a set of dividers, and a student agenda. The school purchases all of these resources for our students.
We had all of these materials ready to go for students in August, but Hurricane Harvey happened.
Two hundred of our 1,100 binders were ruined due to flooding. I have been able to replace agendas and dividers, but I am having a difficult time getting the binders replaced. I really want all of our students to be able to have access to the tools they need to be a well-rounded individual.
These binders house all of the students' work for their core academic classes. They are vital to their daily operation and both students and teachers count on them. This year has been very difficult for us. Our campus is currently housing two middle schools. We split the school day, and we are only seeing our students 2-3 times per week. This year it is even more vital for the students to stay organized and keep up with their work. This project can really help not only my class and my program, but every single student on our campus.
