Teaching Students Math and Science While Cooking!

Help me give my students the opportunity to engage in hands on learning experiences in math and science as we explore the joy of cooking during our bread study.

My Students

The preschool students in our center are the kindest and most lovable people in the world. They look forward to coming to school every day and arrive with smiles on their faces and hugs for those that greet them. Our preschool students are enthusiastic about learning and enjoy spending time with teachers and friends! They love to explore indoor and outdoor spaces, to read books, and they especially love to sing and dance. The students and staff at my school interact as a family, and show kindness, empathy, and support for others.

I love the work that I do each day with my students and their excitement and enthusiasm for learning is infectious!

Our preschool is a safe, exciting, and fun-filled environment for our students to learn and grow. Unfortunately, getting to school each day is a challenge for some of our young learners. Our pre-k through 8th grade elementary school is located in a predominately African-American, urban community in Illinois. Unfortunately, our school community has many issues with crime, violence, and poverty. Our school is part of a large metropolitan district that has high expectations for student learning and academic instruction but is severely underfunded.

My Project

My students love to be in the dramatic play area in the kitchen. They vigorously mix, stir, measure, and cheerfully serve their restaurants guests. These experiences and the questions that the students present in this area made me think of the different ways that cooking can and does influence reading, math and science. As we mix, measure, and read ingredients, my students are learning valuable skills that I hope will influence their eating habits and possible career choices.

Many of my students do not share cooking experiences with their family at home.

Many of their meals come from the neighborhood restaurant or the microwave. I want to use our bread study in the classroom to engage students in a variety of science and math experiences while reading the ingredients, calories, and directions. These cooking experiences will also help students engage in conversations around food and healthy eating as well as exploring foods that are new to our community.
