Help me give my students each a copy of an independent reading book we will be using in class for our reading unit. Focus: Social Justice of Identity, Immigrants, and Diversity
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This school year, teaching students about social justice is our top priority. To start our year-long Social action project, our first social justice focus is on identity. Research says it helps students build skills like leadership and critical thinking. Teaching through the lens of social justice opens students' minds to an emphasis on ethical values, care, and respect.
I am doing this project for all my school's 5th graders (125 students)!
In our first reading unit for a class read-aloud, we will read a book called Front Desk by Kelly Yang. This novel explores the themes of immigrant exploitation, The exclusion caused by racial intolerance and financial hardship, and how persistence can overcome resistance in realizing one's dreams. I want each student to have a copy of our read-aloud, so they can follow along, write down their thoughts, and expand their understanding of other people's identities compared to theirs.
In addition, students learn better from reading materials right in front of them so they can follow along and focus without any distractions from their surroundings. Being able to read along with the teacher builds not only comprehension skills but also critical thinking and self-awareness.
