Teaching Play, Language, and Social Skills: Building Social Competence!
My students need materials and sensory tools to incorporate into speech-language therapy! I hope to improve students; focus and attention, play skills (symbolic, abstract, and imaginative), peer interaction, and developmental social-language abilities!
Hello! Social and emotional development lay the foundation for success in school, work, and life. My students are learning how to play, share, ask appropriate questions, contribute during a conversational exchange, and communicate their intentions. Many students, particularly those with pragmatic language impairments and sensory processing difficulties, benefit from specific instruction and therapeutic tools to help improve learning and social understanding.
I am seeking funding to purchase materials that systematically target the critical aspects of social language development, including attention, focus, play, and social thinking.
I hope to help my students with autism spectrum disorders and language/learning disabilities fit in socially and become competent and compassionate members of society.
My Project
According to Moore-Brown, Sanger, Montgomery, & Nishida (2002), implementing specific language interventions with students who lack social or emotional reciprocity may result in more cautionary, socially acceptable behaviors.
I want to create a comfortable environment whereby I develop and use specific social skills interventions and sensory tools to improve students' social language and cognition!
The bean bags, theraputty, and sensory tools will help students increase fine- and gross- motor skills, as well as gain strength and senory input to help them maintain focus and attention in school. The workbooks and academic materials will be used to help students increase their comprehension, draw conclusions, identify main ideas, make predictions, and develop inferences about people and events. The feeling tubs and play items (e.g., doctor set), will be used to improve play skills as well as to teach students to engage positively among peers. Moreover, the emotional picture cards and social skills games will be used to teach students how to identify and manage various emotional states to overcome adversity.
I will use these materials and tools in accordance with the students' educational plan.
