Teaching Math Through Robotics and Hosting Summer Robotics Camps

Help me give my students access to these LEGO Education SPIKE Prime robotics kits!

My Project

These robotics kits will serve a dual purpose: (1) they'll give some of my high school students the tools they need to earn math credit through the lens of robotics and give my school's FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) FTC robotics team the materials they'd need to host summer camps that would teach valuable STEAM concepts to younger students in their community.

LEGOS have provided creative bliss to almost every student in the USA and would serve as the perfect way to make ALL of my students feel at ease with the STEAM world; to feel what it's like to tinker and problem-solve like an engineer; to feel like they have a place in the robotics and programming world.

Not only would I be able to engage high school students in seeing the real-life applications of math and math thinking in the world of technology in which they're surrounded, I'd be able to have the high school students that I coach after school use these same kits for summer camps. It would satisfy one of the essential aspects of the FIRST mission which is to bring the experience of STEAM to as many students as possible through outreach.

In my "Applied Math: Robotics" class at the magnet arts school in which I teach, this will give my students a chance to not just program pre-made robots but to actually build arms, claws, and other twisting and turning devices to examine the mathematics around gear ratios and torque. Ultimately, I want these kits to get into as many hands as possible so children who never saw themselves as having a place in the STEM world might think otherwise.
