Teaching littleBits About Financial Literacy with littleBits

My students need littleBits kits to learn about financial literacy as they create inventions.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Martel's classroom raised $861

My Students

Albert Einstein said, “I never teach my pupils, I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.” That's the kind of classroom I want to create!

I teach a great group of gifted second graders in the beautiful foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in northeast Georgia.

My students love to learn, but they do not want to learn in the traditional manner! They challenge me each day to challenge them. They like to create and think outside the box. I want to use littleBits with my students. So what are littleBits? They are electronic building blocks with magnets to create circuits instantly. Students can configure the littleBits to create inventions that will complete tasks.

My Project

As second graders my students really do not have any idea about money. Most of them only know to ask their parents and they get what they have asked for. I will use littleBits to teach my students about financial literacy. Students will be given a budget to use littleBits to create an invention. Students will complete challenges to earn more money. These challenges will involve using the littleBits allowing students to learn how the components work. If students want to make more complicated inventions, they can complete a challenge to earn more money for more littleBits parts. This will allow those students who want to learn more, to also earn more money towards their invention. Students will have a "bank account" that they will use to keep track of their money. They will learn about deposits and withdrawals. This will help them to keep within their budget. When the inventions are completed, we will have a classroom Maker Faire to display the inventions and we will invite the parents.

By donating to our project you will help my students to learn that money does not grow on trees!

Using littleBits will allow my students to use their creativity while learning financial literacy. Learning financial literacy at a young age will help my students with budgeting their money in the future. We also might just create an inventor along the way!
