FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. W.'s classroom raised $253
This project is fully funded
I am a 13 year veteran Nationally Board Certified teacher. I teach Kindergarten ESOL in a Title I elementary school in an urban city in Florida which was impacted by Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne, and Wilma over the last few years. Approximately 95 percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch this year, and the entire student body qualifies for free breakfast.
I currently teach 30 students in two homeroom Kindergarten classes and tutor ESOL students in a first grade classroom who were previously my Kindergarten students. I go into these classes for ninety minutes each and teach reading, writing, and oral language in small groups. My students speak a variety of languages including Spanish, Creole, and Kanjobal. Many of their families speak little or no English at home and as my students grow in their knowledge of the English language, they frequently teach their families how to speak English. The students are enthusiastic about learning and proudly share what they learn to their parents when they get home. Research has shown that students learning a second language make the most academic gains when their learning is embedded in hands-on experiences with real objects.
My experiences in teaching support that research, however, it is not always practical or allowable to bring real life objects into the classroom such as animals and larger objects. Many of my students do not get the opportunity to see the world beyond their home or school.
My students get so excited when they see pictures of objects related to our topic of study, therefore I would like to provide meaningful and hands on opportunities for my students to learn vowels, digraphs, rhymes, and blends with the objects in the teaching tubs. Access to these materials will make a tremendous impact on their language skills since knowledge of object vocabulary in English is one of the major stumbling blocks with learners acquiring English as a second language. These teaching tubs will increase their oral language, writing, and reading skills.
Thank you in advance for helping my students become successful and confident readers, writers, and English language learners.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
