Help me give my students hands on experience buying and selling items in a mock classroom store suited for their interests! They need paper for drawing, a whiteboard for their store sign, and lots of snacks to 'sell.'
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a middle school math teacher, I want to create an interactive learning experience where students can apply math to real-world situations. My goal is to build a mock student-run store where students will sell snacks, fidget toys, and other items. This project will help them develop life skills like teamwork, responsibility, and budgeting, while also applying mathematical concepts like integers. Students will use their made up currency, not real money, to practice buying and selling items.
The supplies we need will directly support students’ learning.
**Snacks and fidgets** will be 'sold' in the store, giving students the chance to practice calculating prices, making change, and tracking profits using integers. **Whiteboards** will allow students to create signs and pricing charts, which will help them apply their math skills in real-world scenarios. **Paper** will be used for planning, brainstorming, and creating materials like inventory lists and math worksheets to reinforce their learning.
My goal is for students to see how math is used in everyday life, making learning more engaging and relevant. By running their made up store, students will practice key math concepts while also building critical thinking and decision-making skills.
What makes my students special is their enthusiasm and creativity. They are eager to take on challenges, and this project will give them the opportunity to learn through hands-on experiences. It will also help them see the value of math beyond the classroom, as they take ownership of the store and work together to manage it.
