This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My co-teacher and I have a wonderfully diverse classroom in Queens, NYC. Our students are from Mali, Guyana, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Ecuador, and Nigeria, to name a few. We have an academically diverse group of learners as we co-teach 33 students; some are identified with special learning needs and others are strong academic learners. We have a large class population with a tight class space. We do our best to rotate the students at least bi-monthly around the room for a fresh learning view and new neighbors to team up with.
We have a high emphasis on learning to love to read and to read a variety of genres.
Each day we set aside time for independent reading to help refocus the students and give us time to read one-to-one and have conferences to touch base. Reading helps the imagination flourish, and we encourage books that they "can't put down!"
My Project
The novel Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, is a fantastic story for students, especially fifth graders. The main character is faced with numerous challenges throughout his short life, being just 10 years old.
We want to teach kindness and acceptance to our own students through Auggie's hardships.
Our school has been working on eliminating bullying and devoting lessons to inclusiveness regardless of appearance and abilities.
This novel, about a 5th grade student with severe facial deformities speaks volumes to this issues. We are in need of copies for each student to make these lessons more effective and have a lasting impression. We hope to build compassion and empathy for a generation that is impacted by too much negativity in the world. They will be entering middle school soon where they will be faced with their own challenges among a larger and more diverse population. We hope that the novel can help them face these challenges and CHOOSE KINDNESS.
