Teaching K How to Add and Save Money Pt.1

My students need an iPad, protective cover and piggy banks to learn how to add and save money.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Coldros's classroom raised $830

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students are 5 and 6 year olds who attend a Title I school. We are a Title I school, because 80% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. My students come from low income families, where there is often only one parent working in the household. Even though my students come from a low economic environment, they are still very eager to learn. My students are really curious about everything that comes into our classroom and they enjoy learning and exploring.

My Project

To teach Financial Literacy, I will draw and label on the chart paper the penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar and dollar bill. My students will learn the value of money by reviewing it everyday on the chart paper hanging on the stand. I will also use the coins and iPad to reinforce the value of money. My students will receive a penny everyday for coming to school. They will place their penny everyday in their piggy bank . They will have the option to buy something everyday or save their money in their bank until they are ready to use it to purchase something in the class (pencil 1cent, eraser 2cents, ice pop 5cents etc.). I will have them exchange their money, such as if they have five pennies then they will exchange it for a nickel.

Students will use the iPad for interactive learning by using "Peter Pig's Money Counter" to practice sorting and counting coins and to sort coins based on value and to add up multiple coins together.

This project will help my students recognize and learn the value of money and how to spend and save for something that they want in the classroom. Also, by doing this it will help my students become more financial literacy for the future. So, please consider making an investment in the future of my students. Thank you!
