This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known," Oscar Wilde. The books and materials that I'm requesting will allow students to create their own art while learning about famous artists and illustrators.
I teach first grade in a K-8 inner city school.
Students in our school are together for nine years. I like to encourage a sense of community among my students since they will be learning together for years. Each week I meet for two periods with a group of first and second graders who are eager to be creative. They want to work "hands-on" in the same manner as famous artists.
My Project
The books will open up the students to the life stories of famous artists and illustrators. This will be their inspiration to create their own artwork. The children can use the sketch books each week as they learn about artists. As spring approaches, my class will observe the life cycle of a caterpillar to a butterfly. They will use the butterfly craft kit and acrylic gemstones to create their own butterflies.
These books and materials will broaden the children's horizons.
It will allow them to become truly "well rounded" students. Due to severe cuts to the education budget, these books and materials will not be available without your support.
