My Students

Despite living in today's modern world my students are often woefully unaware of the history of our world. Through the course of the year it is my goal to help expand their worldview in hopes that they may be able to learn from the world around them and grow up to make good choices.

I teach at a Title I public school in Hawaii.

I have taught 7th and 8th grade English over the last two years and this year I am teaching English to an ELL (English Language Learner) population which means my students come from all over the world, but mainly Asia and the Pacific Islands. Due to the variety of backgrounds among my students the challenge of teaching them about the world is much greater and I must look for topics that will interest and inspire them as well as teach them something.

My Project

Every year I do a unit on Holocaust Literature with my students, usually "The Diary of Anne Frank" or "Night." In the past my students have been extremely interested in these units because they are able to learn the stories of people their age who experienced the Holocaust. They also manage to learn some history along the way Often they want to learn even more. Just today one of my student's from last year told me on a family vacation to DC he chose for them to visit the Holocaust museum and he said it was "cool, because he already knew it all since I taught it to him (surely an exaggeration, but flattering). I am requesting a variety of literature and supplemental resources for my teaching unit on the Holocaust so that my students not lucky enough to travel can learn more about the events and people involved.

I believe it is important that we teach our children about world events such as the Holocaust so that they learn to not only have empathy for their fellow human beings but so that their generation will not make the mistakes of generations past.
