Teaching Good Behavior

Help me give my students access to sensory tools, books and games to work to earn, and a video recorder to promote positive interactions with peers via video modeling!

My Students

There are many ways to express oneself. For students who have difficulty in the areas of communication and social skills, behavior is a common means of expression. Many of my students are learning how to communicate their needs, wants, and emotions in a way that is socially appropriate within the context of a classroom setting.

They work hard every day.

Whether they are learning how to persevere when given an academic challenge, use tools and strategies to maintain self-regulation, or appropriately navigate various social situations with their peers my students put in the work day after day and continue to demonstrate behavioral growth.

My Project

Target skills for many of my students consist of: requesting a break, communicating wants, needs, and feelings, and interacting with peers in a socially appropriate way. When students do not have these foundational skills, behaviors that impact their ability to access the learning environment often occur. To help in teaching these skills, I am requesting a video recorder so I can integrate video modeling and self-video modeling into my instructional programs. Both methods are evidenced-based strategies used to increase positive behaviors and skill acquisition in students with Autism.

My students work hard to maintain self-regulation throughout the school day despite being bombarded by massive amounts auditory, visual, and tactile stimuli within the school setting.

The various sensory tools (i.e., seat cushions, fidget toys, stress balls and rings, glitter wands, foam and water beads, and kinetic sand) I am requesting will support these students in achieving and maintaining balance as they learn to use them as tools for regulation. The books I am requesting are of high interest to my students and teaching students to take a 'book break' can be a positive way to support them in learning how to distract themselves and deescalate from a frustrating situation while promoting literacy and fluency in reading.

I am requesting some motivating activities like Legos, Find It, and Zoob connectors. These are highly preferred activities that students are eager to engage in and provide natural opportunities for encouraging parallel play, cooperative play, and practicing social interactions with peers.

Lastly, I am requesting some items needed to support the implementation of my behavior programs such as: velcro strips and dots for visual supports, write & wipe pockets, a hand tally counter clicker, batteries, and a paper cutter. Having these supplies is critical to success of my students.
