This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students I work with live in a high poverty environment and less than standard living conditions. Some girls do not have self esteem or respect for their bodies because of lack of exposure to role models, healthy food and exercise habits.

We recently started a running group to promote empowerment and to teach the girls they should respect themselves and their bodies!

We run in all types of weather. The girls at times do not truly enjoy running because they are wearing jeans, non-running shoes or heavy sweaters. They are uncomfortable and that makes their running experience uncomfortable as well.

My Project

A year ago I started a running group for girls to empower themselves, learn healthy food options, and love their bodies. The girls truly love running but sadly only have jeans and heavy shirts to run in. I organized a "sports clothes" donation to help get the girls some running clothes but I would love for them to have something of their own.

I think if the girls have actual running clothes, they will feel like real runners!

If they have the clothes to access they will want to run on days other than school running group days. I know first hand how running can give you a sense of empowerment and I want to share that experience with my female students!
