My students want to learn how to garden within the big city that they live in! They have little opportunity to plant, experience the ecosystem of a garden, raise animals to help keep the garden alive, and maintain plants. I want to teach for the planet and teach them about sustainability.
Our school is a small public school that was just awarded the California Distinguished Award for our partnership with the community and implementing good intervention strategies to help those students in need.
We have many students from many different countries around the world, with varied life experiences. Being small is an advantage, in which all the students know each other well, work together and take care of each other. Parents help in the classroom and the community spirit flourishes. Students share with one another and teach each other. It is a secret place that needs a secret garden.
My Project
My students will use the above ground planters to grow vegetables and a butterfly garden. They will have a worm farm to raise worms to help maintain the garden and lots of books to read about these worms. They will use the different types of soil to continue to plant throughout the year. I will work hard to teach them about caring for life on earth, both plant and animal.
We live in a large city with asphalt and concrete everywhere.
I want to teach these kids for the planet and show them that they can create gardens at their homes. They will plant vegetables with the above ground planters, raise worms with the worm farm, and experiment with worm castings and soil. Science will be right outside our door. They will read books about worms and experience the animal first hand.
