This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are fifth graders getting ready to embark on the journey of middle school. They attend a Title I school in the San Fernando Valley area. Most do not have technology resources at home and school is their only source for access to these tools.
At my school, the students come from a very low socio-economic background.
My students want to learn so much, but have limited access to resources. They have a yearning for learning and need additional tools to help them learn how to be financially wise. We have a computer lab at our school, but have only limited access to it. In the lab, we access literacy and math programs within a limited time span (due to shared lab time). With the help of PWC Charitable Foundation and Donors Choose, the Macbook Air in my classroom will be an effective tool in teaching my students the skills they need to develop a strong foundation in financial competence.
My Project
My students need a laptop to help them learn about financial literacy. They will learn how to manage, earn, and save for their future in a realistic manner. My students will be able to use the laptop to research their ideas of the "hows" and "whys" of saving money. We will be able to download software programs, such as Investopedia, which will teach them the financial concepts and be visual aids. This program will allow my students to learn about earning money, goods and services, needs and wants, spending choices, saving for short-term goals, and savings accounts. Themint.org is also a useful tool to use while teaching the concept of financial security. They will learn how to budget what they earn, and learn basic mental math skills at the same time (rounding dollars and cents). Acquiring real-world skills will allow my students to plan better for their future.
The donation of a laptop will help my classroom be more financially literate and distinguish the difference between spending and saving.
In addition, they will learn to become financially literate by acquiring money managing skills because it is an essential component of life.
