Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everyday we strive to make our curriculum relevant for our students. In our financial literacy and economics curriculum, we do this by creating a curriculum focused on real life concepts such as creating a small business, writing a business plan, and making smart money management decisions.

Our students range in age from 16 to 21 years old who have left the traditional high school because of their lack of academic progress.

The school is located in the center of Los Angeles and the majority of our students are identified as "high poverty" students. All of our students are "at-risk" because of their credit deficiencies as many of our students arrive at our school at least 1 grade level behind. Within a semester, students who were previously viewed as failures and "written off" are not only passing their 5 core classes, but also earning additional credits. This year we had 47 students graduate who probably would not have graduated otherwise. This is because of the real world applications based curriculum we offer students. Making the curriculum relevant encourages students to participate and progress and as they succeed, they rebuild their self-confidence to realize that they are creative, innovative, and part of today's solution to tomorrow's problems.

My Project

Our curriculum focuses heavily on real world applications. With the transition to the Common Core, this is incredibly important for our students. As part of our electives and economics programs, we offer courses in financial literacy and business in order to teach students about important skills they will need for the rest of their lives. Our students tend to be the students who did not fit the mold of the traditional high school student. Many have interest in being entrepreneurs but have no idea as to how to begin. In teaching about money management, investing, and economics, we also offer an introduction to business courses where they learn about the process of creating a business and conclude with creating their own hypothetical business. As they go through the courses, students work on their literacy and presentation skills. Students are required to write business plans, create advertising campaigns, and make presentations throughout the process to a variety of audiences.

The materials will be the core materials our students will need daily.

Because they are required to make regular presentations, a projector is essential to doing so. The books will be used as the core text for our financial literacy program and supplement part of our economics and life skills programs. Having these materials will allow our students to learn about avenues they can pursue after graduation, as well as develop necessary skills such as public speaking, team work, and dedication.
