This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I was so excited when I received an invitation to interview for a teaching position at this school. Before the interview, I was completely aware of the demographic and performance statistics for this school. This campus is an urban school serving a population of students that are 97% Hispanic and all qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.
The students at our school also achieved the highest academic distinctions possible for any secondary campus three years in a row.
To say they are high achievers does not even begin to tell the whole story. During my interview, I toured the campus and was able to teach a mini-lesson to some of the students. They were enthusiastic, attentive and engaged. They were also sitting in a portable building that must be at least 30 years old in a room with an ancient chalkboard and makeshift whiteboards covered with white contact paper. At that moment I knew I wanted to be in a learning environment that students and teachers worked with whatever they had to pursue excellence.
My Project
To maximize learning potential, classrooms should be open, comfortable, well lit, and visually stimulating. From the front door to the classroom, the aesthetics of learning spaces impact brain function and influence how students feel when they are in school - as well as how they feel about their school.
When students walk into my room, they experience an environment created with love, but with limited teaching tools and resources.
My students are outperforming not only schools in our city, but schools in our state and nation. They are doing this in outdated portable buildings that still have chalkboards or chalkboards covered in white contact paper.
Studies show that the brain likes new things. Posters and other images on walls help capture students’ attention. The easiest and most economical way of doing this is using magnetic whiteboards. I have requested a glass magnetic marker board. A glass board is more durable and will last longer with middle school students.
