Teaching Environmental Science Through Art and Cartography
My students need environmentally friendly, and reusable Scrubby Notebooks and the semi-permanent markers that come with them.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Combs's classroom raised $491
This project is fully funded
My Students
Our students are incarcerated youth who have spent very little time in any sort of typical classroom.
Something in their lives has gone horribly wrong; now they're not only paying for it, but trying to learn something new to keep themselves from returning to the juvenile justice system.
These students are still at the early stages of the game where they haven't given up hope for the future. Thus, they see each opportunity to learn a new skill as something that could help turn their lives around.
My Project
Students will learn that by reusing materials, whenever possible, they can impact the environment by not taxing its resources. They will go outside with their Scrubby Notebooks and semi-permanent markers and learn to draw the surrounding environment the way an early naturalist would. In addition they'll also learn basic cartography, mapping the course of their walk to where they intend to set up to draw the landscape plein air style. They'll also be sketching ideas and schematics for designs for a rigging system that will allow them to be hoisted to elevations capable of letting them scan objects the size of trees to better inform elements to include in their basic cartography.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
