My students need a variety of engaging books that demonstrate empathy.

My Students
In all things, be kind. This is our classroom motto and we strive everyday to live these words. We are a supportive community of learners and leaders who look for ways to become better citizens every day! I am fortunate to team teach, which gives me the opportunity to teach literacy to two groups of energetic, inquisitive, and curious fifth graders.
My students truly enjoy working collaboratively in all settings, and show a true desire to become better readers and writers together.
Our students live a diverse community and attend a neighborhood school. There is a beautiful park near our school and the local YMCA is within walking distance, offering students enrichment opportunities. My students love to read, and I love introducing them to new books!
My Project
Each of these books is a beautiful example of the theme empathy. This book selection includes a variety of genres such as memoir, historical fiction, and prose. My students will engage in book clubs with diverse books that demonstrate how our interactions with others make an impact on our lives, as well the lives of others. In a book club format with their peers, my students will study a character's words, actions, and feelings, recognize how the character changes in the story, and identify the turning point in the text to identify the theme of empathy. My students will record their reflections and thinking in a Readers Notebook to share with their group and during individual conferences.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to bring an engaging selection of diverse text to the classroom, you will also help us to recognize and celebrate the goodness in our hearts.
Empathy is difficult to teach, it is through quality literature and reflections of reading that my students will learn the importance of truly understanding what it means to walk in another person's shoes.
