Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I still remember the classic books I enlisted my big brother to read to me before I was fluent as a reader. I want to foster this love of learning by making available to my students classics such as Caps for Sale and others as we read them together.
My students come from a variety of cultures and socio-economic backgrounds, and attend a literacy- and arts-based school that fosters a love of learning and creates a warm, comfortable setting for students to be exposed to new learning experiences.
I want to encourage them to ask questions and make connections between texts, as well as text-to-self connections.
My Project
With a donation of materials including classic books and props, I will be able to make reading "come alive" for non-readers and reluctant readers. I will show them how to use strategies to make connections and decipher texts, to make connections between texts, and to ask good questions as readers, in addition to developing their writing abilities. I will showcase the classic books in "Favorites" baskets and around the room after they are read and develop groups to analyze and develop the stories further in work stations that will include art, literacy, math, and science, based upon the ideas in the books. For instance, students can make clay gingerbread men and developing their own version of the story, The Gingerbread Man.
In this time of limited resources, any and all contributions to help early learners master basic skills are welcome.
By providing materials not currently in all three kindergartens, Donors Choose will enhance the school experience for 80 kindergarteners, including some English language learners and students with special needs, as well as those who are gifted. Each child will benefit from the experience of having the same books read to them and by them to discuss with grade-level peers, and to create a foundation for success.
