My Students

Have you ever met sixth graders? They are full of curiosity, energy, and enthusiasm on the verge of becoming their own people.

The students in my year-round urban charter school are 95% low-income.

They attend school from 8 am to 5 pm daily. The staff at our charter school works diligently within our rigorous curriculum to help education come alive! As one of the top-performing charter schools in the state, our school is working daily to help our students achieve their full potential.

My students struggle with issues that often fall outside the scope of understanding. From poverty to food insecurity, homelessness to incarcerated parents, they face head-on many challenges that would make adults crumble. Even with these challenges, they come to school each day trying to put their best foot forward and grow as students, academics, and leaders.

My Project

One of the most important jobs that educators have is to become a student of their profession. Once we leave the college classroom, we become immersed in the teaching world, and it's easy to feel like we have completed our education. Still, the world marches on, and new research changes what is taught and how it is taught. As a teacher, the responsibility for learning these new ways falls on your shoulders.

I want to give my students the best of me and the best of the world.

To do this, I have to stay on top of my own learning as much as I am on top of theirs. These books will help me understand what the latest research says about reading and help me be the best reading teacher I can be. As we face new challenges, including at-home learning, new technology, and the changing face of reading, teachers need to learn new skills.

This knowledge will impact my teaching practices and those of the teachers around me as I work in concert with other teachers. Without a doubt, it will impact the lives of my students as my teaching evolves to serve them better.
