This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students learn best when they ask their own questions, set their own goals and can connect their learning to the real world. Inquiry based learning develops the imagination, critical thinking skills, creativity, cognitive skills, collaboration and allows children to appreciate other points-of-view.
I teach a group of 3rd grade, gifted students in an inner-city school in a large metropolitan city.
A large percentage of students at my school come from low-income households and thus all students have access to the free lunch program. Many students do not have access to technology that will help them succeed in today's world. My students are enthusiastic learners with a great deal of potential. My job is to inspire them by integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and promote critical thinking skills.
My Project
The minute I walk into my classroom I plug in and turn on my laptop computer. My current laptop is outdated, slow and resets when my battery life drops below 95%
My laptop is the single most important and effective tool I use to teach my students each and everyday.
Here is an example of how integral it is to my curriculum:
We begin each day by viewing and taking notes about an instructional video on Brainpop that directly reinforces the math, science and social studies concepts that I am teaching in class. We then move on to reading during which I use my computer and classroom camera and projector to project mini-lessons onto a screen. During Independent Reading Time, students read stories and articles on sites like Read Theory. After reading, I give my students a chance to get up and move with a video from GoNoodle, that not only gives my students a break but also reinforces what we are learning during the day.
During Math and Science I use my laptop to show my students videos that provide direct modeling of concepts. I use sites such as Prodigy and Khan academy to reinforce the Math concepts I teach.
I also utilize my computer to assign and give real time feedback on writing and social students assignments on Google Classroom. These are just some of the ways in which I use my laptop to teach the students of today each and every day.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
