Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am privileged to teach first grade at a school rated as one of the most diverse in the country. My students come from varying socioeconomic statuses, immigrant families, and speak several different languages. The diversity at my school has unified my students and created a community unlike any other I have every experienced.
In addition to their unique backgrounds, my students also vary widely in their learning styles and needs.
Since most of my students have parents who speak English as a second language, they are self-reliant independent learners. This is especially impressive since my school is a 50/50 immersion program where students are taught in two languages daily. I am amazed at how hard they work to become proficient in two languages and learn material in half the instructional time many of their peers in traditional schools learn in an entire school day.
My Project
As a 4th-year educator, I seek opportunities to improve my pedagogy and better serve my students. Like Dr. Seuss said, "It's better to know how to learn than to know."
Currently, I am in need of professional development to help me meet my students' diverse learning needs.
The annual Staff Development for Educators (SDE) Conference (in particular, the "I Teach 1st" strand) will provide me with the resources I need to improve my pedagogy and benefit my students.
Attending this conference will not only immerse me in an environment with like-minded educators, but also allow me to exchange ideas and learn from veteran teachers. In both the short- and long-term, my students will directly benefit from my access to expert educators who will train me in updated methods.
SDE will provide me with ideas and resources that will empower me to differentiate the specific needs of every child in my classroom.
