Teacher With A Disability (TBI) Returns To The Classroom

My students need items such as fidgets, blocks, mirrors and magnets to fulfill their sensory needs.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Magnan's classroom raised $325

My Students

My students have special needs and could really benefit if they had access and exposure to sensory objects to stimulate their needs. If they learn, they know there is a reward at the end of their learning and hard work to stimulate their senses.

A little over three years, ago I was in a serious accident where I almost lost my life, but I lived.

I have to live with a traumatic brain injury. Because of this, I was unable to teach for two years. Now that I am finally back in the classroom, I need some help because I came back to a new environment where my students have many special needs and are low incidence. They are so loving and so caring and try so hard to accomplish the lessons I try to teach them. If they had access to sensory objects, I am sure their needs would be met and they can and learn everyday with structured play and rewards. A sensory corner would help meet their needs with appropriate supervision.

My Project

My students struggle with disabilities where it makes it very hard for them to learn and stay focused in a classroom. After my experience of living with a TBI, I have come to find out that knowing after you accomplish something, something good will happen. For example, after my accident, I could not walk. Now, I run every morning before work. It feels great and I am able to get through my day with strength and determination. I believe that if my students have the things they need to meet their sensory needs, they will be encouraged and determined to complete their tasks and have ambition to achieve at their grade level. If they had these sensory items to use daily to meet their sensory needs such as blocks, mirrors, fidgets and magnets, they will be motivated to complete their work. This will definitely improve their learning and therefore, they can achieve at their grade level and beyond.
