Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach special education students who most have just begun to use technology as a learning tool. Our district has provided all students with Chromebooks, but many of our students are having a difficult time using the Chromebooks, and many of the parents are also having a hard time accessing materials we send online. I upload work and provide videos as much as I can, but I find that students and parents still are unable to access work.
I know my student population and they require hands-on learning material to stay engaged and have meaningful learning experiences.
My students need to maintain the skills they have learned such as cutting a straight line, identifying common signs, etc. These skills cannot really be practiced on a Chromebook. Therefore, I need to get my students' hands-on materials to be able to continue to work on the skills they have been learning in school. I cannot go back to my class to create things and make copies, and I do not have the things I need at home. Therefore I rely on your support to help me get my students the supplies and materials they need.
My Project
I'm writing this project a day after it was confirmed that my district will begin in the fall through distance learning. Distance learning has been a challenge with my students because many of them are unable to access technology on their own, or just have a difficult time sitting down and staying engaged for over 5 minutes without and hands-on activity. I have been learning and researching how to support my students and thanks to DonorsChoose.org citizen donors, I have received materials that support my students and myself during this time of distance learning.
I am asking for materials that will be used to support me as I try to keep my students engaged and motivated.
The Apple pencil will be used during Zoom meetings and interactive videos to draw or create symbols digitally. I am really looking forward to using the Apple pencil in Explain EDU. It will be easy for me to put together drawings, text, photos, and videos from various apps to create a single presentation to share with students and parents. In the classroom, I draw symbols or images that support lessons, with the Apple pencil, I can do these drawing digitally and will be easier for me to upload into presentations. I also added materials that I need to complete support materials for students. The rings will hold life skills pictures and the pouches will hold art supplies. The file folders will help me keep organized at home.
I appreciate any support with this project. It is hard knowing I won't be able to see my students and do the fun, hands-on, engaging activities we normally do, but at least I an try my best to teach them as much as possible online.
