Teacher! The Dinosaur Died Again!

My proposal needs one Compaq Presario laptop computer.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Felder's classroom raised $1,187

This project is fully funded

I teach science to junior high students in a small rural district in southwest Mississippi. We are a poverty-laden district, which makes our tax base of support limited. "Pinching pennies" is a way of life for teachers in my district.

One thing I have not been able to pinch enough pennies to acquire is a laptop computer that I can use to add the "POP" of technology to my classes. I have a desktop PC that is more trouble than it is worth: this "Dinosaur" freezes up multiple times each day, requiring a reboot. I sometimes even get treated to the "Blue Screen of Death". That's always fun in the middle of a PowerPoint-centered class project! Like all school districts nationwide, my state and local districts are pushing for the use of technology in the classroom. That's all fine and good but the "powers that be" seem to have overlooked one small detail: how does one acquire the technology component required of today's lessons when one doesn't have two nickels to rub together? Politicians not thinking something through - imagine that!

I am a whiz at throwing together PowerPoint presentations, concocting educational games and spicing up lessons with animated critters and pictures. These things are very hard to do, however, when the computer doesn't want to compute. An up-to-date laptop that I can hook directly to my LCD projector will allow me to add the "POP" of technology to my lessons without having to stop the discussion, reboot the Dinosaur, wait and wait, get back to the file I was using, find the place in the presentation where we were, and start praying that the Dinosaur will let us finish this time. What a relief it would be - for me and for my students - to actually be able to go smoothly through a lesson without interruption!

Your contribution to my proposal will make it possible for this teacher to compute on a consistent basis. Having a reliable computer at hand will allow me to incorporate the myriad of resources available through today's technology into my lessons. It will allow me to help my students not only learn science but also learn about computers while having some fun with games, videos, powerpoints, etc. Sometimes all that is preventing a child's understanding is a photo or a graph or an animated illustration that can be delivered so vividly through today's technology. Thank you in advance for your consideration and help.
