My Students
My students motivate me each and every day. They are thoughtful, strong, funny, insightful, kind, driven young people who push me each and every day to be a better teacher and a more socially conscious individual. They demand so much from me, as I do from them.
My students face a variety of challenges--they attend school in an underfunded district, in a city plagued by segregated violence, run by individuals who fail to acknowledge the link between the two.
Despite the shortcomings of many of the politicians and leaders around them, my students come to school each and every day with an eye toward the future. They work hard to do their best, overcoming obstacles no child should face as hurdles to education, shaping themselves to be the change-makers we need in our workplaces and public institutions.
My Project
My students come into my classroom, in person or virtually, knowing that I am planned and fully prepared to engage the class in a robust learning exercise. This generally starts and ends with the use of technology. Students come in and are immediately met with the topic and day's objectives projected from my laptop. The whole of my three curricula are housed on my laptop, filled with digital files of the myriad visuals, videos, songs, poems, maps, and graphs that we use to better understand our world and the roles that sex, gender, race, ethnicity, and other important aspects of identity play in the way that we move through it. A fast, functioning laptop (one is not provided to me) is foundational to continuing to provide students with an organized, at-the-ready learning experience.
