When I was in third grade my teacher, Mrs. C., wouldn't help us spell anything. Instead, when we asked her how to spell a word, she'd open her mouth and say "D-I-C-T-I-O-N-A-R-Y", carefully giving each letter of the word... until we finally realized she was telling us to go look in the dictionary!
My third grade readers attend school in a southwest lower Michigan.
We live in a very rural area and love our school community very much! We focus on language arts in our classroom and students just love knowing they are correct in how they are thinking about using and spelling words in their writing. Third graders are eager and excited learners!
My Project
We need a collection of dictionaries to help in daily spelling. Dictionary skills are becoming a lost art in our digital society, but it is so important for students to be able to look up words, find parts of speech, and learn new definitions to increase vocabulary... not to mention help us with our spelling! We'd also love a few thesauruses to help expand our vocabulary even more! These materials are particularly kid-friendly and not intimidating, which I know will make my students eager to use them.
I would love to be that teacher who can spell "D-I-C-T-I-O-N-A-R-Y" to my 3rd graders just like Mrs. C did to us when I was in 3rd grade!
She helped us all develop important reading and study skills... and, though we didn't know it at the time... helped cultivate our independence, develop an early love of language, and responsibility for our own learning. Thank you, donors, for your consideration in helping bring these kid-friendly materials to my third grade classroom.
