Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Studies have shown again and again that students who who are committed to learning a music instrument perform better in their academic classes. My entire school community believes this to true; everyone from the principal to the staff to the parents is dedicated to the development of a sophisticated music program.

Although it is a fundamental ingredient for success, dedication can only take us so far. Our program needs the necessary learning materials in order to assess and adapt the quality of instruction so that we can maximize student progress. One area we plan to focus on next year within the music program is assessment. During our limited rehearsal time, we focus on the skills and concepts a musician needs to master so that he or she can perform well. Then we rehearse music in preparation for our 7 concerts throughout the year. We've found that there is simply not enough time during our rehearsals to accurately assess how well our students are performing on an individual basis. We need a means of hearing the students play by themselves that will not take up valuable time during group rehearsals. That way, we can assess areas of difficulty and adapt instruction so that students can be successful.

We need some tape recorders that the students will be able to sign out and take home with them. These tape recorders will allow each student to record a specific performance assessment - scales, long tones, a passages from the concert pieces, etc. - in a comfortable environment with no distractions. Then the student can listen back immediately and decide if that performance was his or her best. If not it can be re-recorded before submitting it to the teacher. Once the recorder is returned, it can be signed out by the next student. Of course, this process will save rehearsal time. More importantly however, it will further develop the students' ability to recognize weaknesses in their playing and correct those problems on their own. This is a skill that will help them in all areas of life.

Your donation will make it possible for our students to maximize their progress as they take on the difficult task of learning a musical instrument. There is no better teacher for us musicians than our own ears. These tape recorders will be valuable in the development of our young musicians' listening and problem-solving skills.
