Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine life without computers? Without Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat, etc... My students can't and they want to learn how to build the next thing in technology you never knew you couldn't live without!
Our school is predominantly minority, consisting of 46% Black and 53% Hispanic students; 60% of our students reside in government housing and 12% reside in temporary shelters.
We are an urban, low socioeconomic, 85% free lunch, Title I school. The majority of my students come to school each day facing unimaginable challenges at home and in their neighborhoods, yet they persevere, coming eager to learn and desperate to defy the odds.
My Project
My proposal is for a four-week stipend summer professional development which will teach me everything I need to know in order to teach an AP-level computer science course. I love technology, learning, and my students. This proposal combines all three. My students are the ones who have been begging for a computer science class and this PD is the perfect opportunity to heed their incessant requests, to further my knowledge about Mobile CS, and to starting my school's first CS Course (non-afterschool course that is).
Why the stipend? Taking this course means I am unable to teach summer school and unable to earn the additional income. This opportunity is worth sacrificing some summer income, but sadly the high living cost of NYC means I am not able to sacrifice the income, and fortunately this opportunity, PD and stipend, means I don't have to.
This proposal will vastly impact my school; allowing my student to be competitive in our ever-changing, technology driven world.
A CS course will open doors which were previously shut, enabling my Title I students, to be one step closer to defying the odds.
