Teach Me To Think!

Help me give my students thinking games like Mastermind and Bananagrams. We have one of these games in our class and it just is not enough. We want class sets!

My Students

The fifth grade students at our school are constantly working toward being stewards of our watershed, empowered decision makers, historians and conscientious community members. We are located in south-central Montana, just north of Yellowstone National Park. We are an active, outdoorsy and environmentally aware class. Being engaged with our "backyard" keeps us connected to our watershed.

Our daily goal is to explore learning through personal experience and modeling.

The Fifth graders of our school value the knowledge they acquire in this year of study, and some students reflect upon graduation that it was their favorite.

My Project

Mind engaging brain breaks! When students play "games" or do "puzzles" they think they are on a brain break. It feels relaxing, fun and without stress of outcomes. Brain breaks are a necessary component to learning. Can I offer a brain break without compromising opportunities to learn and think? Yes! Currently, we have one Kanoodle game and a waiting list for a turn to have it. After lunch, while I read aloud from a historical fiction chapter book, students do puzzles, independent mind challenges or sketch. By far the most sough after option is the independent mind challenge (like Kanoodle) then the 1,000 piece group puzzle project and lastly, sketching.

"I cannont teach anybody anything; I can only make them think" ~Socrates.

Games like Bananagrams for word building and spelling practice and Mastermind code-breaking and analyzing add to a thinking social environment without sacrificing learning.
