it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Did you know that private music instruction can cost as much as one hundred dollars an hour? As a result, many talented students in our community do not have the opportunity develop important skills, grow their self esteem, and find enjoyment through music.
Our students are amazing!
Many have already overcome insurmountable obstacles, have jobs to help support their families, are working hard to go to college, and are reaching out to form meaningful relationships with adults who believe in them. Over 85% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch, many are English Language Learners and have had somewhat limited opportunities to develop their hobbies and interests. At our school--a small learning community--our students are known individually and supported by people who care for them and believe in them. It is a safe and supportive environment to learn in, and work in, despite the roughness of surrounding neighborhoods. However, because of our intimate size we do not have the numbers to fill a full orchestra or band, but many of our students have requested and shown an interest in pursuing music.
My Project
Under new leadership, our school is now committed to beginning and expanding a music and arts curriculum. I am requesting a digital piano to start a program at our school. In the following months I will continue collecting as many resources as possible in order to teach a rounded extra-curricular music and performance curriculum to a projected 15-25 students each semester. This small initiative towards starting a music program at our school will, in the following semesters, be expanded to include guitar and choral instruction. These guitars will allow students without access to instruments of their own to be a part of an exciting opportunity for developing music literacy, exploring a new talent or interest, increasing discipline through independent practice, and participating in performance opportunities at school and community functions and fundraisers.
This project is so important because music is such a vital part of the human experience, and is currently absent from our school curriculum.
Students in this program will showcase their new skills in music and performance. Perhaps most vitally, this program will provide a safe and productive place for students to come after school--to pursue a common interest, develop their skills and self esteem and provide service opportunities in their community.
