This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine trying to translate the word "Bailar" into English only to find that the entire "B" section of your English/Spanish dictionary is missing! Learning a new language is no easy task and it is more difficult if the proper supports and materials are not available.
As part of a cluster of schools, our school is the designated ELL (English Language Learner) school.
As a result, many of our students speak English only as a second language or not at all, and many have only recently arrived to our country within a couple of months.
Even with the difficult task of learning a brand new language, our ELL students are highly motivated and willingly accept the challenge of becoming fluent English readers, writers, and speakers. Our ELL students take two English classes to accelerate their language acquisition and many even choose to take after school and night classes to further supplement their learning. It is this type of motivation and dedication that our students demonstrate each and every day and it is why they are so deserving of something as simple as a suitable English-Spanish Glossary/Dictionary.
My Project
The Vox English/Spanish Dictionaries are an amazing resource to have in an ELL class. Although it is called a dictionary, its function is more of a translator or glossary because no definitions are provided. Our students are intelligent learners who already come with a wealth of knowledge and rich vocabulary in their primary language. For most of our students, the issue is not acquiring vocabulary and definitions, it is a matter of translating and learning proper conjugation. With these Dictionaries/Glossaries, we would be able to further develop our students abilities to translate and acquire English.
Students often resort to using online translators which simplify the process of language acquisition and often undermine the learning process that takes place in the classroom. These resources would allow are students to effectively practice the translation process and continue acquiring English.
Every semester that our students stay in an ELL English class, they lose a semester of English credit.
It is not until they reach non-ELL English that they receive the English credits they need to go to college. This project can very well be the difference between a student having the opportunity to move out of ELL classes or staying behind and losing out on another semester. Our teachers are dedicated and our students are motivated. All we need is the final piece of the puzzle. Thank you.
