Our school is located in a rural setting. We have deer, bobcats and wild turkeys that roam on our grounds. We also have a creek that runs behind our campus which provides a wonderful location for an outdoor educational environment.
This year I am teaching a second/third grade combination class.
I am really enjoying my class. My new second graders are amazing, hardworking, inquisitive students. My third graders, all whom I have taught before, are independent, smart and amazing! How can I go wrong with this combination of students?
My Project
My students need an incubator, 24 quail eggs, 20 bird house kits, a package of acrylic paint brushes and 40 containers of acrylic paint. We will raise the quail in our classroom and then release them into the wooded area behind our school. The bird houses will be built, painted and erected in our school garden. Having birds in our garden will be wonderful for observation and journal writing. The paints and brushes will be used for painting the houses.
Our school will be celebrating its sesquicentennial (150 anniversary) this year. We plan to create a mural for one of our school buildings. I will be overseeing a GATE class that will create the composition of the mural, design what elements will go on the mural and paint the mural. The focus of the mural will scientific discoveries or inventions that have been made over the last 150 years. The paints and brushes will be used for this project, as well.
By providing these supplies, you will be giving my class an unique opportunity to learn about local wildlife by watching quail hatching and growing.
Students will also be able to use the medium of paint to express ideas and thoughts about scientific inventions and contributions to the world over the last 150 years. I will be able to "Teach for the Planet" with these materials.
