Teach for the Planet as First graders Find Solutions
My students need environmental books and a comfy rug to enjoy their reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are learning to be nature nurturers rather than Eco-zappers! My biggest challenge is finding Spanish books to keep them motivated and engaged while building their environmental awareness. I want to "Teach for the Planet" and strive to help create problem solvers for our Earth!
I teach in a dual language school.
My students have very diverse backgrounds and are curious learners- especially on the planet! Igniting that natural curiosity is my passion! I work feverishly to spark their interest and to see light bulbs glowing in their actions and minds!
My Project
However, many of my students are spending the better part of their days on activities that are not sustainable for our Earth. I find my challenge to be instilling in them the desire to want to protect and conserve their environment. By providing them read alouds about conserving our planet, my students will be aware of how beautiful it is to reduce, reuse, recycle to protect our planet. I have also included a small rug to sit during circle time. My students would love to sit in a comfy rug while they read and venture in the quest of how to protect our beautiful planet. Some of the titles that we requested are how to take care of our planet, the stars, and what happens in a recycling center. We will incorporate all the science books into our shared reading block.
The project's goal is to increase their knowledge base in areas of environmental science (climate change, energy conservation, & sustainability).
I also want to develop their problem solving skills in areas of global impacts.
The informational books will give them the background knowledge for these areas. We will use them in read alouds, centers, and project based learning tasks. The rug will help my students feel comfortable as they listen to the ways we can protect our planet.
