This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each year my 1st graders teach me, even though they are only 6 years old and come from homes below the poverty line. My students have wonderful and varied personalities, and are easily enthused when allowed to participate in learning activities. They are bundles of potential but need support to succeed!

In 12 years of teaching, I have not had a class that did not amaze me in some way.

The children that I teach come from inner city homes and most often don't have the benefit of experiences that more well to do children have. Most haven’t visited museums or even the library. They don’t know many vocabulary words. Some don’t even know the letter sounds. But they abound in personality and character. Each year, a lot of learning takes place but I am always working to improve my teaching. I especially enjoy using technology to build my students' experiences and understanding. This is why I was thrilled to participate in a summer Smartboard Integration Training. It was an intense week-long program where I worked with a small group of teachers to learn how to use each smart tool to create lessons in all areas that allow children to participate, manipulate, reveal, categorize, define, and more. I am excited by the amazing potential in teaching with Smartboard. Now I want to put it into action!

My Project

My school is inadequately supplied in technology. I do have access to a small original 100 series model Smartboard that is supposed to be shared between 5 classrooms on my floor. It is very clunky, falls off its stand, and when trying to teach with it I constantly have to reposition it and restrict students from getting in the way of the projector. The 800 series Smartboard has an above screen projector that will not need to be adjusted and is big enough for three 1st graders to work at a time and everyone to see. Now that I've been trained and understand how to create amazing interactive lessons targeted to what my students are studying I really want my students to have the opportunity to get excited during lessons when coming up to the Smartboard to manipulate items. I've got a list of lessons that I want to share with my students using Smart tools to motivate. Having a new Smartboard in our class every day will allow me to plan and integrate this technology into all curriculum areas.

Now I know the tools that are available to teach and motivate my students using a Smartboard.

Many schools have a Smartboard in every class already, and their children use them with skill. I want my low income 1st graders to have the benefit of this wonderful technology as well. No children should be left behind. Please help us with a donation. We would really appreciate anything you could give, and it would not go to waste. I will be thrilled to use it to teach my 1st graders for years to come!
